Open Inventor FAQs - File Formats

What file formats does Open Inventor read?

Open Inventor reads the following file formats:

  • .IV - Binary or ASCII
  • .WRL - VRML 1.0, VRML97
  • DXF
  • OpenFlight
  • Catia 5 (Requires an additional license)
  • IGES (Requires an additional license)
  • STEP (Requires an additional license)

Image File Formats

  • GIF
  • JPEG
  • JPEG 2000
  • PGX
  • PNG
  • PNM
  • RGB
  • Sun raster
  • TIFF
  • BMP (Windows only)

See Importing data for more information.

What file formats does Open Inventor write?

Geometry File Formats
Open Inventor can write out a scene graph in the following formats:

  • .IV - Binary or ASCII
  • .WRL - VRML 1.0 (see SoToVRMLAction)
  • .WRL - VRML97 (see SoToVRML2Action)

Open Inventor will write out a scene graph (see SoWriteAction) using whatever file header you specify. By default, it will use the standard Open Inventor header (#Inventor V2.1 ascii or #Inventor V2.1 binary as appropriate). If you want to write out, for example, a "clean" VRML97 scene graph, and your scene graph contains Inventor nodes, you will need to convert those nodes to VRML97. The write action does not do the conversion automatically. See the conversion classes, SoToVRMLAction, SoToVRML2Action, etc.

Image File Formats
Open Inventor writes the following image file formats using the SoOffscreenRenderer:

  • JPEG
  • JPEG 2000
  • PGX
  • PNG
  • PostScript
  • PNM
  • RGB
  • Sun raster
  • TIFF
  • BMP (Windows only)

Other Formats
Open Inventor can write out an .HTML Image Map. See SoToHTMLAction.

If you have HardCopy, you can produce vector-based output in the following formats:

  • CGM (binary or clear text)
  • PostScript
  • HPGL
  • GDI

See Exporting Data for more information.

Are there APIs in Inventor for reading in WRL files directly?

Open Inventor can read both VRML 1.0 and VRML97 (formerly known as VRML 2.0) files directly (i.e., all the nodes are native "So" objects).

For an in-depth discussion read the Using VRML Nodes chapter.
